Summerhill..........4-11
Simonstown..........1-17
Two goals in the first period of extra-time gave Summerhill passage to the Premier Division Two final after an absorbing semi-final contest in Summerhill on Saturday evening that saw Simonstown fall just short.
Earlier in the summer, Simonstown had plundered six goals on their visit there for a group game but this time the home side were a lot more protective, committing fouls whenever Simonstown momentum built.
With a slightly more experienced and physical side Summerhill held an edge throughout though the level of commitment from the visiting team was to be applauded, especially as they chased down a six-point deficit at the end.
Simonstown might well have won it too in normal time when Eoghan Gough struck for a superb goal in added time.
But with referee Seamus O'Connor allowing up to eight minutes for delays Summerhill had an opportunity to draw level and force an additional 20 minutes which they did for a 2-10 to 1-13 scoreline.
Simonstown had led by a point at the break, 0-10 to 2-3, with Gough and Andrew Kearney (pictured) picking off some fine scores.
Fionn O Hanluain was lost to a nasty facial injury and Summerhill appeared to be getting on top when they edged 2-6 to 0-11 ahead at the second water break, further extending that to lead by two points prior to Gough's goal.
At half-time in extra-time Summerhill led by 4-11 to 1-15 but Simonstown kept pressing and added two more points to close the gap to three after being hit by the double goal strike.
Simonstown had a few goal chances, Chris O'Neill with the clearest one in the first half while goalkeeper Adam Niven's performance also caught the eye.
Despite the defeat it was progressive campaign for the seconds with players like Tadhg Hanrahan, Luke Caffrey and, in latter games, Niven and Jack Melia making their mark in adult football for the first time.
Two thirds of the starting team on Saturday was under 22 with three of the four substitutes also in the same age bracket.
Well done to Hank Traynor, Brian McEnery, Jim Lane and the rest of their management team for their efforts over the summer.
