Sean Tobin has been confirmed as Simonstown senior football captain for 2021.

Sean recently stepped away from inter-county football after eight seasons with Meath and that has presented an opportunity now to lead the team.

He will take over from Padraig McKeever who has been captain for the last two years, having previously been captain in 2017.

Both players are entering their 14th seasons as members of the senior football team.

What shape that 14th season will take remains unclear after the confirmation last week that there will be no GAA activity until Easter (April 4) at the earliest.

The Government's updated 'Living with Covid' plan, due out next week, could give a clearer indication as to when club activity will be given the green light.

Last year, club games required Level Two status to be played and any reasonable projection for that now is June. Non-contact training in pods of 15 had Level Three status.

Inter-county action may not get underway until early April and with a four-week pre-season required that could potentially see the leagues being played off over five weekends (including finals) in May and into early June with a break for club action similar to last year before inter-county championships resume, possibly in October when some crowds may again be permitted to gather.

There is a strong push nationally for underage teams to be able to engage in non-contact pods sooner rather than later. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar suggested as much in an interview early last week while GAA president John Horan expressed hope over the weekend that such training could be permitted in line with the re-opening of schools. The publishing of the updated national plan early next week will bring more clarity.
