Simonstown 1—7(1—2) Wolfe Tones 0—12(0—6) Simonstown made their exit from the 2024 Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship on Saturday afternoon in Parc Tailteann where neighbours Wolfe Tones clung on for a two point win.
Tones won the toss by Referee David Gough and played with the wind blowing into Hospital end in first half. Using the wind had posted two points before Ben Hoey with fine effort from distance opened Simonstowns account. Sean Conlon and Tadgh Hanrahan were on top at midfield and setting up play when Sean Tobin got on the end of a move and while his shot was partially saved by Tones net minder O Gallachoir it crept over the line and put Simons 1—1 to 0—2 ahead with eight minutes gone. Unfortunately Sean Tobin got injured in the move and had to be replaced by Shane McEnery. This was ablow to simonstown as he had been leading the attack well at that point. At that stage the Sky Blues had put together a number of good moves but the wind either held up passes or they were just cut out at the last moment by resolute Tones defenders with inter county experience. A Thomas O Reilly free and a Cian Ward "special" from out near side line on Terrace side had the teams level at the end of first quarter 1—1 to 0—4. Tones went in front with a point from play while Padraig McKeever stroked over a difficult free after Aaron Farrelly was heavily fouled to have the teams level 1—2 to 0—5 with four minutes remaining in first half. Brian Conlon went through the heart on the defence but O Gallachoir produced a fine save low down at his left hand post. Cian Ward found himself in a little space and another special from an acute angle put Tones ahead in second minute of injury time. The first half defending by Simonstown was excellent limiting Tones to shooting from distance. At the short whistle; Tones 0—6 Simons 1—2.
Simonstown now had the wind advantage and Eogan Gough fired over after a lengthy spell of patient play with three minutes to tie the match 1—3 to 0—6. Then Sky Blues Sean Conlon cut through the defence but O Gallachoir brought off a great save and the ball was scrambled to safety. Tones went upfield immediately and went ahead from play but Tadgh Hanrahan split the posts 1—4 to 0—7 as the game entered the fourth quarter. Tones had a very productive five minutes adding three points. Saron O Fionnagain caught two balls under pressure in goalmouth area and converted both.Caolan Ward then tapped over a minute later. Thomas O Reilly added a close in free while in between these scores Shane McEnery with his back to goal pointed for Simons to leave three between the teams 0—11 to 1—5 with eight second half minutes to play. Padraig McKeever fired over from distance but Oisin Martin put Tones three up with normal time up. An all out last attack as Shane Barry floated a driven ball into goalmouth where Briain Conlons palmed effort just went over the bar in fourth of injury time. Both sets of players were exhausted as Tones clung on and claimed Semi-Final place. Seven Simonstown players got on score sheet with Tones conceding just one scoreable free. Tones had six players on target with Simonstown defenders conceding just two scoreable frees. Well done to Manager Joe Lyons, coaches/selectors Eanna Donoghue,Keith Brady, physio Keith Matthews, Tommy Caffrey and Jim McCabe for looking after team during year. A very special word of appreciation and thanks to sponsor Alan Meade of Landscape Solutions for their support.
