It was the Luke Caffrey show for Simonstown with eight points 0—8(2f.m) in Walterstown on Monday evening in the first round Premier Division 2 Championship match against Navan town neighbours O Mahonys.
O Mahonys were sharper from the throw in but were confined to shooting from distance but never the less were 0—4 to 0—1 ahead after ten minutes. Luke Caffrey raised the first white flag for Simonstown. O Mahonys continued to dominate and score, tagging on four more points before the break. Simonstown replied when Caffrey got his second, Jack Melia his first and Fionn O Hanluain converted a forty five to leave O Mahonys leading at half time 0—8 to 0—4.
The Brews Hill men pointed from the restart while Caffrey tapped over a free after he was fouled. O Mahs tagged on two more points (1f) while David McKeever slotted over from distance for the Sky Blues to see O Mahs lead by five 0—11 to 0—6 with eight second minutes gone. Colin Wickham,Joe Lyons and Niall Kane were then summoned from the bench and their impact was immeadiate. Simonstown scored four in row without reply through Luke Caffrey three (1M) and Jack Melia. One score now seperated the teams. The Brews Hill men extend their lead to two but back came Caffrey with another fine point and Fionn O Hanluain converted his second forty on the night to tie score at 0—12 each with ten minutes to play. O Mahs added two more and were leading 0—14 to 0—12 with time up. Ronan Duffy made a point blank save and saved the rebound attempts on three occassions. Simonstowns midfielder Brain Neary fired over from distance. A free resulted from subsequent kick-out which Luke Caffrey converted to tie the match.
